Welcome to holding the space

"I am Paula Marije Clegg, a qualified and experienced counsellor, offering warm compassionate support for adults and adolescents in a central Exeter location."

At certain points in our lives we seek counselling out of a need for emotional support, or because we want help in bringing a greater sense of contentment and meaning into our lives.

As a qualified counsellor I can help with:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • stress
  • anger
  • low self-esteem & confidence
  • relationship issues including family and couples
  • gender and sexual diversity
  • trauma
  • attachment loss
  • domestic abuse
  • bereavement
  • identity
  • life transitions
  • inner child work

The type of counselling I offer is "relational" which means that the safe, supportive relationship between the client and counsellor is an essential part of the process.

If a client feels accepted and understood they are able to gain a greater understanding of past and present issues, and to feel empowered to make positive changes in areas where they are stuck.

In developing this therapeutic relationship I bring warmth, compassion and sensitivity to who you are in the moment, and how you are feeling. In this way the relationship can safely 'hold' emotions and thoughts that are usually pushed away out of fear or pain, allowing them to be explored and gradually integrated.

This is what led me to call my counselling service 'holding the space'.
